How to Choose the Right Rifle Stock

Evaluate the stock and firearm together. An AR-15 carbine stock has different fit requirements than a replacement stock for an AK or a bolt-action rifle.

Platform and Model Compatibility

Confirm the manufacturer’s listed compatibility with your exact firearm. Stocks for AR-15, AK and bolt-action platforms use different interfaces. Even within one platform family, receiver design, action length or model generation can change which stock fits.

Buffer Tube and Mounting Interface

Many collapsible AR-15 stocks slide onto a carbine receiver extension, commonly called a buffer tube. Mil-spec and commercial carbine tubes have different outside diameters, so the stock must match the tube. A fixed rifle stock or a kit with its own receiver extension can have different requirements.

For AK and bolt-action stocks, check receiver or action compatibility and any required hardware. A complete stock kit and a stock sold by itself may include different components.

Length of Pull and Cheek Support

Length of pull is the distance from the trigger to the center of the buttpad or rear shoulder-contact surface. Adjustable stocks let you change that distance to accommodate different shooters, clothing and shooting positions.

Compare the stock’s cheek-contact surface with the height of your sights or optic. Length-of-pull adjustment and cheek-height adjustment are separate features; a stock that adjusts in length may have no adjustable cheekpiece.

Weight, Sling Mounts and Other Features

Compare listed weight, buttpad design, adjustment controls and sling attachment points. Some stocks have QD sling sockets, webbing slots, storage compartments or mechanisms intended to reduce movement on the receiver extension. Check which features belong to the exact model you are ordering.

How do I know whether a replacement stock will fit my rifle?

Match the manufacturer’s compatibility information to your exact rifle model and configuration. For an AR carbine, check the receiver extension type and diameter. For a bolt-action rifle, check the model, action length, barrel contour, magazine system and handedness. For an AK, check the receiver and rear mounting interface.

What is the difference between a mil-spec and a commercial buffer tube?

Mil-spec carbine receiver extensions have a smaller outside diameter than commercial carbine extensions. Choose a stock made for your tube diameter. An incorrect match can prevent installation or leave an improper fit.

What is length of pull, and why does it matter?

Length of pull measures the distance from the trigger to the center of the stock’s shoulder-contact surface. It affects how the firearm fits your body and shooting position. An adjustable stock lets you change this distance within its available range.

Should I choose a fixed or an adjustable stock?

A fixed stock has a set length unless its design uses spacers or other fitting adjustments. An adjustable stock lets you change length of pull. Compare the available length, cheek support, weight and mounting requirements with your intended setup.

What is the difference between a stock and a complete stock kit?

A stock-only listing may require you to reuse compatible mounting components. A kit may include a receiver extension, buffer, spring or hardware, but contents vary. Read the included-components list before ordering; the word “kit” does not establish universal compatibility.

Can I put a shoulder stock on a pistol?

Adding a shoulder stock to a pistol with a rifled barrel shorter than 16 inches generally creates a short-barreled rifle. The resulting classification depends on the firearm’s configuration; adding a stock to every pistol does not automatically create an SBR.

Effective October 9, 2026, ATF announced non-enforcement of specified NFA making, transfer, registration and related requirements for SBRs. This policy does not repeal the NFA or override state and local restrictions. Gun Control Act requirements continue to apply, including applicable ATF Form 20 requirements for interstate SBR transportation.

Are adjustable and folding stocks legal in every state?
